COVID-19 Tax Extension Pushes Deadline to July 15, 2020

NCDOR Announces Tax Filing Deadline Extension To July 15, 2020

The North Carolina Department of Revenue has announced that the deadline for the filing of North Carolina income tax returns for individual, corporate, and franchise taxes will be extended to July 15, 2020, to match the announced deadline change from the Internal Revenue Service.  The NC Department of Revenue will not charge penalties for those filing and paying their taxes after April 15, 2020, as long as returns are filed and taxes paid by the updated July 15, 2020 deadline.  IMPORTANT – However, the Department of Revenue does not have authority to offer relief from any interest on taxes owed that may be charged to filings after April 15, 2020.  Unless state law is changed, tax payments received after April 15 will be charged accruing interest over the period from April 15 until the date of payment.  See NC Department of Revenue news release Saturday, March 21, 2020.
